I believe that non-English degree students should also consider enrolling in this course, along with English majors, particularly those studying Graphic Design and Communication. As a Graphic Design major, myself, I found Folio to be extremely helpful in understanding the publication process, providing me with a wealth of new information that I can apply to my field of study.

Since 1999 Folio, Salt Lake Community College’s award-winning literary and visual art magazine, has drawn together emerging talents within the college to create a platform for student voices and experiences. This publication showcases and honors the brilliant imagination, creativity, and activism of the SLCC students through their poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, photography, art, and multimedia.
Folio: SLCC’s Literary & Arts Magazine is produced in ENGL 1830: Literary Magazine Studies. This is the course that markets, curates, edits, designs, publishes, and launches an edition of Folio every fall semester.
In this course, students will learn about the theory, practice, and history of literary and art magazines while producing a print and web edition of Folio. Students will gain experience with literary publication software such as Adobe InDesign, digital communication tools, and Publication Center printing equipment while exploring the changing landscape of literary and art publication today.
The Folio Team consists of a faculty advisor, students taking ENGL 1830, and paid interns that are part time staff. Students who have taken the class or who have an interest in learning about print and digital publication are encouraged to apply to be an intern.
Students will
select and edit literary submissions and copy-edit/proofread the print and web publications,
advertise and help coordinate Folio related events and design and layout both the print and web publication,
market the magazine and ENGL 1830 course.
Folio: SLCC’s Literary & Arts Magazine won Second Place in the 2019 CCHA Literary Magazine Southwest Division Contest and Third Place in the Southwest Division for 2014.
